The Lake Conroe dam was constructed in 1973 to create an alternative water source for the city of Houston; it was a joint effort between the City of Houston, Texas Water Development, and the San Jacinto River Authority. Lake Conroe's location is roughly 40 miles North of Houston, with the South Shore and dam located off of Hwy 105 about 10 miles West of the City of Conroe.
Lake Conroe has over 21,000 acres of surface water, being about 19 miles long from top to bottom, and about 5 to 6 miles wide at its widest point. The average depth of the lake is around 20 to 25 feet deep, with the deepest points being the old river channel which runs through the middle of the lake at 80 feet. Lake Conroe's waterfront has over a 150 miles of picturesque shoreline, almost half of which borders the Sam Houston National Forest which will remain undeveloped, making boating, fishing, water skiing and sight seeing a pleasurable experience.
There is also plenty of wildlife surrounding lake Conroe waterfront homes; these include several species of birds as well as raccoons, armadillo, and an abundance of deer. Lake Conroe has been recognized as one of the best lakes in Texas for cat-fishing over the years, though there are also plenty of other species of fish, such as large mouth bass, striped bass, white bass, crappie, blue, channel and flathead catfish. Lake Conroe is also becoming one of the premier large mouth bass fisheries in Texas. In addition to holding many weekly local fishing tournaments it is in partnership with the Professional Anglers Association which hosts the nationally televised Toyota Texas Bass Classic fishing tournament each year. The venue has returned in Oct since 2009, highlighted with $450,000 worth of purse money as well as performances by numerous Country music stars. There was also a new lake record large mouth bass caught in February of 2009, the fish weighed in just shy of 16 lbs! Lake Conroe is expected to keep producing more and more lunker bass; since the year 2000 almost 2 million Florida strain large mouth bass have been stocked into Lake Conroe waters by the TPWD.
